Synopsis

Deep Ornament explores the opportunities present in the morphologies of ornamentations as point of departure for the design of architectural conditions. Inherent qualities such as space articulation, components, organization, structure and circulation form the ground for a variety of speculations on spatial conditions. The sensorial and spatial experiences co-notated with the manifold qualities of contemporary, algorithm driven ornaments, from their topological qualities to the distribution of components and patterns forming the structural body, are scrutinized for their architectural qualities and incorporated in a project.

The aim of this work was to explore the possibilities that Ornament and Alternative Geometries bring for the creation of informal diagrams, unexpected paths and affective spaces. To pursue this intention, two components were chosen and agglomerated with specifics parameters. The result is a building, which started from a cell, and due to many evolutionary processes, the cell transformed in a curve, then in a surface and then in enclosures. These enclosures are not only the envelope of the building, but also the interior space.

Just a couple of comments on your plans....Maybe you had it anyways in mind:
In your section what is missing is how your building is attached to the ground. You may need to indicate
some Pile Foundations. I would also say that your foundation plate could be slightly thicker.
Also keep in mind that if your lineweight is too thin, it may disappear when you print white lines on black.
They just drown in the printing color. As rule of thumb I would say the 0.18pt in illustrator is the absolut lower limit.

In your plan the grid is missing which helps to understand the size of your project....

Dear isa,

I guess its good news that there is not much to say, what tweaks you can do for your final results.

1: In your case I would use the renderings with the pink shader, the black shader ads too much contrast to your renderings. The pink, fleshy shader gives your rendering a slot of vivid deepness.....Don´t present both colors. Just the pink version.

2: Your plans look pretty alright....just take a little care for the the lineweights, maybe you can increase the lineweight here and there. When you print on black background it can easily happen that lines that are too thin are not visible at all, and drown in the black background...

I developed a system to partition the space into two main levels. The hole in the floor which extends all the way to the ground level, serves as a column and at the same time presents an opportunity for a ramp or stair case.

Learning from the mid-term, now I am trying to turn what I developed before into architecture. This needs precision (exact dimension and scale). I think there are 2 key aspects to be figured out:

1 - how does my component really work
The previous exercises, I tried to find out different 'patterns' for agglomerations in both 2-D and 3-D. However, that can't help to work out as a building if I don't move back to the basic and understand how two or more of my components really are fixed together. I could say there are 3 fundamental goals.
i. It should be a flexible joint allows for not just one way of connection/arrangement

ii. It should be simple enough to be prefabriacted

iii. Strong structure Logic (understanding the forces in the members - compression and tension) (In most of the cases, when iii. can be done, i and ii will just happen naturally)

Instead of starting from nothing again, I observed the component I have again. The first feeling was that - it is too complicated and it is hard to understand 'why' it has to be like that. I tried to subdivided into smallest part, which is not reducible anymore. Testing with physical model, although it can't fully represent the real situation, I can still see that it doesn't have much advantage for taking loads and carrying forces. Deformation can esaily happen becoz of the twisted and looping and interlocking framework.

As a result, I take the same 'unreducible part' to construct '3 arms' components. From the pictures, you can see, other than forming a tetrahedron component (the one I had developed before in Topmod), it could also form surfaces with different densities, with weaving pattern. I also can construct 3-dimensional surfaces which could form a spatial structure that can stand on it own. In fact, I think the '3 arms' component is more interesting to be developed than the rigid and complicated tetrahedron component. It's simpler, more flexible in arrangement and with structural sense. Moreover, I think it still keep the essance of the orginal one. The tetrahedron could be seen as just one of the results. The next step will be to see if these different ways of agglormerations (surfaces, spatial structure or tetrahedron) can actually be combined into the architecture....creating various spaces...

2. - how to work out the concept with the site and programme
Vague ornamentation has been part of the concept of my project. Again, for a building, this is not enough. I take a further step to really draw the section and plan of the site. Meanwhile, I try to take my component as an abstract form which is - just a tetrahedron. Therefore, it is easier for me to see how components occupy the space, the solid and void relationship (although the solid part may turn to be just wireframe later), and become a volume.

The site model (1:200 scale) I built is an attempt to see how different scales of the same components can fill up together, with gradual changes/movements according to the programme situable for the site. My ambition is that people inside will not just see the ornament becomes the floor, wall, roof, but really as a deep ornament space. The model is not yet finished, and I also realize that I shouldn't stick with tetrahedron. More operations have to be done and considered in order to break the regularity/repeated type of space within each zone formed by the same scale of components - then gradually becomes vague again.

After the above explorations, followings are the latest images of my building developed so far using the new 3-arms components with different scales for different spaces. Because my computer was broken during the holiday, I used another software but soon I will move back to Maya for rendering and animation.

The physical model of the component aggregation is still building up, but the shadow and the layering effect are starting to perform as expected. The next task is to fill up a volume with reserved spaces, that is going to be exciting result.

Observing how my little natural builder aggregate his "components" also give me some inspirations and motivations to continue this exploration. Another inspiration come from the hairy surface of the hendecahedra. Is it possible to make the component flexible and give this "soft" texture instead of the rigid texture from the physical model?

Finally, working in Maya has brought me so much frustrations because Particles doesn't work in my case. The only model that getting close to imitate the behaviour of the physical model would be using Instance copy and animate the objects with gravity field. But this Maya model containing only 32 simplified components already dragged the computer to almost frozen... don't know how to continue...

I started to play with my initial component, rotating its three axes and changing the scale in z axis while paths are created. The result is just product of the interaction among the components. Any shape was pre-stablished - one of the rules for this work. The emergent behavior is the starting point for develping spatial contitions.

I haven't changed the the morphology of the component in this exercise. I'm trying to do so with other explorations, but any successful example til this moment.

Another simple hybrid form is populated with ornament to understand the spatial conditions created by them. Although the form came from the long evolutionary process but still the idea behind that was to create the non-linear forms of nature. The low height entry of the building leads to the main exhibition space with a loft that connects to the other space through bridge. Random arrangement of ornaments are used here but keeping in mind structural intergrity of whole mass.

Shadows are the integral part of these ornaments that not only gives the sense of another dimension to them but also to the space either enclosed by them or outside.

Here i proceed according to my morphogentic diagram. Stage-2, after finding the right ornament that satisfy the criteria i explore different arrangements (variations) to use them in various ways according to the spatial conditons.

Random arrangment-1 satisfy the criteria more than other arrangements to make the building as light as possible, but in some spaces i will also try to experiment with other arrangments.

In my opinion, the showroom should be at the big side and the office should be at the small side.

In the part of showroom should have both natural light and artificial light, to create various atmospheres. The aperture of the building should have a few but quite big to make the contrast between natural light and artificial light and make the connection between in and out. Here, I show two main types of modules composed of my components - Vertical / Horizontal. Both of them have the attempt to create layers and result into a 3-dimensional space. For me, I am more satisfied with the kind of quality formed by the horizontal module. I especially like the dissolved volume in the 8th image. However, I am facing the problem how to arrange them in a sense that the overall form has structural and logical sense and fuzziness not appears just horizontally but also vertically. Another option is combining two modules into one building, but I am not sure if that is too much and diverse the effect.

Technical questions:

It would be also great if anyone knows how to avoid heavy file size after many times of duplications. Instance duplication helps to reduce the file size but that also hinder me a lot to move each component around freely (They always stick as a group).

Is it possible to cast nice shadow with maya software renderer?

I tryed to build my model having cube as a basic. I extruded its. At the end I played with two layers. That's why the model consist corrosion ornament outside and inside. The layer inside has less wholes- they are like "windows" and "doors" -they allow better interior. The layer outside covers whole model- is a little bigger. It repeats stomas in places where they appeared in first layer and has new wholes which can be presented on flat,smooth and previous surface . It plays role of overlay.

I pick one of my components and try several arrangements to create blur effect. I recognize 3 main operations are used to manipulate.

Rotation, Scaling and Layering

By rotation, opening of the facade is created gradually and yet the connection between each component is not broken. The change of opacity is impressive.
However, the rotating movement (done by duplicate special) of each row of components becomes very strong that at the end, its over form somehow takes away the blurring close-up quality.

By scaling and layering, I create a module composed of components of two different proportions and randomly arranged and create quite a blurring atmosphere and like an unfinished piece of wall. However, it takes me lots of time to duplicate and arrange in a random way.

I haven't find out a satisfactory solution/technique - and what frustrated me is how to have a breakthrough from just making a 2-dimensional wall to really enclosing a space.

DECODING THE MODE III

The first model conducts a study on the fusion of armature + skin into a single entity. There is also an attempt to get the armature exposed mainly where apertures exist.

In the final set of models, an ear was given to what the topological constituents of the model had to say with regards to apertures and surface articulation.

I try to looking on mathematic sequence to create cellular patterns which generated by geometry form

Above are the list of components playing with different geometries. The upper part of the trials show the different types of components: compacted, surfaces, bone-like. I am not sure which is the right type yet.

Then, I did look at various tessellation and space-filling polyhedra. I actually get inspired by 16-cell, a four-dimensional dipyramid and develop components in the lower part of the list. I use wireframe to review the interlocking within the component. I think some create cloud-like image, but I still doubt weather it's just a formal issue, not meaning the component itself is intelligent or embedded the idea of BwO....something is still missing and wait to be tested out ....

So, I am looking deeper into the Blur Building by D+S(R) to understand what Cloud/Blur Effect means to architecture of BwO. I think I have to understand what is Architecture of Atmosphere in order to not take that literally. I would also like to look at what aggregates and granular behavior are, which may also have particle behavior like cloud.

Questions are

- what are different ways of creating blur?

- what are responsive system?

- what are different forms/effects of Ornamentation? How can differentiation happen in ornamentation?
