At the moment you are stuck with one problem you still haven't decided whether to go with the whole to part or part to whole approach. The series of elements you created in the lower image is too complex for a component but I like, that you are fearless when arranging your components (in the upper image), but as mentioned before they are too complex for this approach and wont create spaces. For me, to come to a result as quickly as possible you have 2 options: 1. If you want to use this technique of assembling, then your components need a simpler structure - try fibers (I will send you images of a former student's work)
2. try Aleksandra's approach. In the posting titled: "ALEKSANDRA-MODELS" in the last images (3rd from top). This technique could also get you to a result (but I suggest you forget about the "legs")
